"#SOSBrutalism is a platform for a large online campaign and global survey to save our beloved concrete monsters. It was established in 2015 by the Wüstenrot Stiftung and the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Ten years later, in 2025, our database contains more than 2,300 Brutalist buildings. Around 175 are registered on our RED LIST, which means they are threatened with demolition or significant changes (as of 2025/26). Our mission is to work towards their preservation. With the help of many scholars, photographers, activists, and fans of Brutalism, who are encouraged to contact us at [email protected], the database is still growing. Our social media feeds are active 5 days a week on Instagram and Facebook. We would also love to hear from your rescue campaigns all over the world and will support your issues as well as we can!"
"After two years of operation, in autumn 2017, we recorded the current status of the database with its then 1,106 documented buildings. The conclusion: Since then 14 buildings from this list have changed status from RED to BLUE, from endangered to officially recognized cultural heritage, including the highly controversial Boston City Hall. But even some of those on the BLUE LIST, like the legendary Berlin Mouse Bunker, still face an uncertain future. Even if a building is listed as a historic monument, its preservation is by no means guaranteed. First, the renovation has to be successful, and its operation has to be guaranteed in the long term. That is why we have documented four renovation cases in detail for the 10th anniversary of #SOSBrutalism to promote outstanding best practices:"
"2) Public swimming pool (Svømmehall) in Stavanger, Gert Walter Thuesen / Jacob Grytten, 1964–1971"
"3) Theater (Stadttheater) in St. Gallen, Claude Paillard, 1961–1968"
