"PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Brett P. Smiley and the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism today announced that stay silent will return to PVDFest on Friday, September 18, with the free LUV U BETTER Block Party from 5 to 10 pm at the Providence Rink. Launched in 2015, LUV U BETTER is an all-R&B party featuring DJ sets that move through different eras of R&B, soul, dance music, and contemporary influences in hip-hop.  Saturday night headliner Big Freedia will welcome Earl Bright & Elevated Choir to perform with her during her set, which begins at 8:30 pm on the Plaza Stage. This collaboration builds on a PVDFest tradition of bringing Providence artists together with nationally and internationally recognized performers. The choir, which has shared its music with the Providence community for many years, will also perform on Saturday at 12:40 pm on the Plaza Stage."

The independent review, conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), found that Providence's response was highly effective across City government, highlighting the courage, professionalism and adaptability of first responders and City personnel under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. PERF also found that Providence personnel acted decisively despite incomplete information and that the City's response met or exceeded key benchmarks for active-shooter and hostile-event responses."

Smiley and the Providence Department of Housing and Human Services (HHS) today released the City of Providence’s second annual Housing Progress Report, highlighting significant progress in creating new homes, preserving existing affordable housing and protecting residents experiencing housing instability. In FY2026, Providence issued certificates of occupancy for 988 new residential units, nearly twice the number brought online in FY2025. Approximately 40 percent of those newly completed units were affordable, nearly four times the state’s 10 percent requirement for low- and moderate-income housing. The City also permitted 726 additional residential units, exceeding the annual production target established for Providence under the State’s Housing 2030 plan by 17%. “Providence is building and completing new homes at a pace we have not seen in decades,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “By removing barriers to development, investing directly in affordable housing and putting underused public properties back to work, we are creating more housing choices for Providence neighbors. We know there is much more work ahead, but this report shows that our strategy is producing meaningful results.”"
