"Shane Waters - Minor Hurling Team of the YearAnother accolade has come the way of Na Piarsaigh’s Shane Waters as the Minor Hurling Team of the Year was announced late last week. Shane was named at wing forward following the exceptional season he put down, captaining Limerick to our first All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship since 1984. Shane was also the first Na Piarsaigh man to captain Limerick to an All Ireland crown. A truly special honour on a personal level for Shane and his family, but also for all his coaches and mentors in Na Piarsaigh that have played a role since he was down on a Saturday morning.Senior Hurling Championship Round 1 (30/07/26 Gaelic Grounds)Na Piarsaigh 0-24Kilmallock 1-22Our senior hurlers commenced their championship with a loss to Kilmallock in the Gaelic Grounds on Thursday evening last. We had decent spells in the opening half, stringing some lovely passages of play together, converting some good points. Playing into a stiff breeze, we had 9 different names on the scoresheet when the break arrived. Peter Casey notched 3 along with Conor Boylan getting 2. Eoin Brosnan registered a point on his Limerick Championship debut, having come on in the Munster Club against Ballygunner back in November. Emmet McEvoy even managed to march his way up the field to raise a white flag. We were 3 ahead with 2 to play in the opening half before Kilmallock’s Shane O’Brien caught a high ball, turned towards goal, and blasted past the Dow. We responded well with points from Keith Dempsey and a ling range free from Ronan Lynch to have us leading at the break. Half time score: Na Piarsaigh 0-15 Kilmallock 1-10.The longlist of scorers in the opening half was unfortunately reduced to just 2 in the second. Keith Dempsey notched a few more frees along with 2 from play, our only man to do so in the second half hour. Ronan Lynch also 3 placed balls. We struggled to get a real foothold in that second period with Kilmallock growing ever the more confident as the game moved towards its conclusion. We conceded some frustrating frees in the dying moments, with our opponents taking full advantage. Kilmallock went ahead on 63 minutes and ran out 1-point victors. A frustrating end to a game that looked well within our grasp for a time. Mark O’Connor made his senior debut in Thursday’s game, putting in a solid performance at corner back. It was brilliant to see Mark follow up on his exceptional season with our intermediates in 2025, and duly stepping up the challenge. Minor Hurling Championship Round 3 (29/07/26 Páirc Uí Dromgúil) Na Piarsaigh 1-14Kilmallock 0-21Our minor hurlers suffered their first loss of the campaign in the final group game at home to Kilmallock last Wednesday evening. Already through to the semi-final, the winner of Wednesday's tie would guarantee top spot in the group along with a semi-final fixture with the second-placed team in the opposing group. Despite the result, it must be noted the quality of hurling on show in this game. Both teams traded points in the opening half, Alex Kearns and Charlie Ryan both getting in for a pair while Shane Waters struck 3 from play. Our goal came from the boot of Sean Connolly, low to the left of the Kilmallock keeper. Nicky Engligh’esque. The goal separated the sides at the break, 1-09 to 0-09. Kilmallock looked the more eager on the resumption of play, quickly wiping out our lead. Daniel O’Donovan was introduced and pointed from the centre of the field. We could only settle for fress outside of Dan’s score. A frustrating 30 minutes for our lads as Shane was triple marked at times. Kilmallock took full control in the closing 10 minutes, running out 4-point winners. The result sees us finish second in the group and lines up a semi-final against the top placed team in the other group. There’s still a round of games to be played in that other group. Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 1 (31/07/26 Fedamore)Na Piarsaigh 1-20Bruree 1-25Our intermediate hurlers put in a spirited performance against a much fancied Bruree on Friday evening last in Fedamore. The South Limerick side lost out to Murroe Boher in the 2025 intermediate final and it looks like they won’t be far off it again in 2026. We played with the aid of the breeze in the opening half, making the most of it with some exceptional scores from all over the field. Wayne Kearns was our standout performer coming away with 5 points from play, all scored in the first half. He notched some impressive scores but his most noteworthy came 15 minutes in. A long strike from the centre of the field, landing just outside the square, bouncing off the turf and sailing over the bar. The only score I can compare it to being Colm Coyle’s point for Meath to draw the 1996 All Ireland football final with Mayo. Unfortunately, Wayne’s score against Bruree didn’t have as big an impact on the history of the GAA as Colm Coyle’s point. We entered the break a point behind, down 1-14 to 0-16. Watch on Youtube Playing into a strong gale in the second period, the work rate and spirit shown from our lads was admirable. Evan Sweeney was putting in a shift for the ages, popping up in our full back line at key moments, while also causing trouble for the Bruree defense at the other end of the pitch. Alex Kearns was making his intermediate championship debut, going on to score 7 points, 4 of them from play. Evan Gilvarry and Josh O’Halloran were holding down teh fort at the back, both driving the team on for the hour. Paul McDonagh was introduced at half time, forcing an exceptional save from the Bruree keeper around the 45 minute mark. Jack McCarthy buried a goal in the dying moments to give us a glimmer of hope but it came too late in the day. Our next game sees us take on Hospital Herbertstown in Caherelly next Sunday at 1pm. "Minor Hurling Championship Round 2Na Piarsaigh 2-19Ahane 2-17We entered this game having secured a convincing win over Mungret in round 1 two weeks ago while our opponents lost out to Kilmallock by a single point in their opening game. Unfortunately we didn’t seem to carry much momentum from that Mungret win into the Ahane game as the Castleconnell men hit us for 1-05 to our solitary point inside 8 minutes. While a little bruised and slightly shellshocked, our lads slowly but surely fought their way back into the game. Ahane’s big lads were very strong under their puck outs, us struggling under the high ball. We did however have a decent spread of scores in the opening half with Bermo, Padraig Murnane, Charlie Ryan and Alex all raising the white flag. The pick of them came from the stick of Ferdia Minihane, driving over from long range. Sean Connolly struck a well timed goal also, soloing in from the left to place the ball low to the keepers right hand side. It was a badly needed 3-pointer. We entered the break a goal behind, 2-09 to 1-09.While we finished the first half strongly, it was clear a change was required. Shane moved from midfield to the half forward line, providing another target for Bobby’s puck-outs. It didn’t take long for teh switch to have an effect, Shane fetching a puck-out with 4 or 5 Ahane lads around him. He was fouled and converted the resultant free. Frees were a common enough theme in the second period as we got into a habit of winning them. Ben Murray alone won 3 following some dogged work at midfield. Shane stepped up to land all 3. The Ashbrook man was simply sublime in the second half, be it in open play or frees. He came very close to adding a goal halfway through, forcing a top quality save from the Ahane keeper. Alex Kearns got in on the action half way through with a lovely score, darted over from an acute angle on the right to out us 2 points up. Chasing the game for long periods, we now found ourselves ahead but Ahane reeled us in again to level the tie. A draw game with 1 minute remaining, Charlie snuck in for an exquisite goal, slipping it past the Ahane keeper, using every ounce of ingenuity to not get blocked or hooked by the Ahane defenders surrounding him. Shane pointed a free directly after the goal to add an extra level of comfort. Ahane brought the margin back to 2 with a couple of frees before one of their forwards riffled the ball off the outside of Bobby’s goal. Luckily for us it was the wrong side of the post. The ball was pucked out and the final whistle was blown. A hard fought win for Na Piarsaigh that required some real character. Our next game sees us take on Kilmallock in round 3 on Wednesday the 29th in Páirc Uí Dromgúil. Both teams are through to the semi-final following 2 wins each. Round 3 will decide who’ll take top spot in the group. Intermediate Football Championship Round 2 Na Piarsaigh 0-17Claughaun 1-09Rhebogue was the venue for round 2 of the Intermediate Football Championship on Friday evening last. If you’re wondering what happened in round 1, this game was refixed for Wednesday the 9th of September due to St. Senan’s having a player involved with the Limerick senior hurlers. It was a cagey opening half from our lads, coming into this game possibly undercooked due to the refixing of round 1. Claughaun were coming in off the back of a 2-point victory over Crecora in their first match. Our opponents played with the breeze at their backs in the opening half, they landed a 2-pointer early on. Evan Egan did well, ending the half with 4 points, 2 from play, while Stephen O’Halloran also struck 2. His second blazing inches above the crossbar, a definite goal chance. The half ended with us a point to the good. We were playing a small bit within ourselves at times but you could say there was a bit of dirty diesel we needed to get out of the system. Half time score: Na Piarsaigh 0-08 Claughaun 0-07We got the ideal start to the second half with Kieran Daly adding a lovely curling strike over from his right, on the right. Egan followed with a free before Claughaun got back on the score sheet. They slotted a free before landing a fortuitous goal, bouncing off elbows and backsides before ending up in Eoghain Sherlock’s net. It was the wakeup call we needed to get properly going. We went on to score 7 unanswered points, the pick of them coming from 2 of our young substitutes Odhran Gilroy and Daniel Collins. Sean Long also got in on the action, getting on the end of a good team move. Sean was my pick for man of the match. His physicality and ball-carrying ability proved incredibly difficult for Claughaun to contain all evening. Cathal McMullan and Ralph Leonard were also impressive throughout the 60 minutes. We looked solid and assured in the final 10 minutes, closing out the game with a comfortable 5-point win. Huge credit to Con Daly and his management team for the work and effort they’ve put into this team since the turn of the year. It’s brilliant to get off to a winning start and I’ve no doubt the lads will build on Friday’s performance in the championship games to come. Round 3 sees us take on Drom Broadford on the weekend of the 14th of August. "Na Piarsaigh 2-22Mungret 2-07Our Minor hurlers got off to a winning start in the championship on Wednesday following a convincing 15-point victory over Mungret, in Mungret. Shane Waters returned for his first Na Piarsaigh game of 2026, fresh off captaining Limerick to their first All Ireland Minor Title since 1984. Shane had an outstanding campaign in the green jersey, topping it off with 1-06 in the All Ireland Final. It was a proud day for all in Na Piarsaigh to see Shane lift the Irish Press Cup, being the first Na Piarsaigh man to captain a Limerick side to an All Ireland crown. He picked up from where he left off at the weekend, registering 10-points in Wednesday evening's tie, 5 of those from play.Alex Kearns proved a right handful for the Mungret backs all throughout the 60 minutes. The Woodview man ended the day with 5 points but also won multiple frees that were duly converted by Shane Waters. Bobby Collins was solid and assured in goals utilising the short puck-out to great effect in the opening half when playing into a stiff breeze. He had a young but effective full backline in front of him with Seán O’Brien, Ronan Gleeson and Liam Sheahan all performing well.Marcus Murphy was selected at centre back for Na Piarsaigh, about 40 yards out from his regular spot in goals. He was assigned the task of keeping Mungret's danger man Killian Begley under wraps, a job he rose to the challenge of. He was flanked by George Stack on the left and Ferdia Minihane on the right, both putting in solid shifts. David O’Keeffe was our star performer in the second half. He led the charge as we pulled away from our opponents in the last third. Himself and Ben Murray made for a good partnership at the centre of the field.Both of our goals came in the second period, Bermo finishing off a good team move with a “Brick Flick” to the net. Our second came from the stick of Charlie Ryan, calmly slipping the ball past the Mungret keeper after some excellent built-up play from Ross O’Flanagan. Sean Connolly and Padraig Murnane chipped in with 3 and 2 points respectively, both showing some fresh enthusiasm in front of goal. Wednesday’s game also marked the return of Danny Sheehan following a long injury layoff.
