"Contrary to what Kinky preferred we believe, he was not born wearing his cowboy hat and boots, with a cigar and a quip hanging from his lips. Kinky grew into his persona over time, and much of who he became was honed at Echo Hill Ranch, his families summer camp in the Texas Hill Country. Echo Hill provided a stage for Kinky to try on many personalities, many ideas and little or no guardrails to hinder his explorations. Jimmy Kessler and I had the opportunity to be a part of those somewhat unhinged days. The three of us spent years together, jumping from one outrageous possibility to the next. Jimmy was always the anchor, letting us know when we had leapt past the boundaries of common decency. My job was both to suggest the next insanity and to listen to Kinky, when he was either off the charts or diving deeply into his kind, empathetic heart."
