"WSM Grand Ole Opry — WSM went on the air on October 5, 1925 to much fanfare. A fellow from WLS in Chicago, George D. Hay, came to Nashville to be a part of that first broadcast. What would become the Grand Ole Opry went on the air November 28, 1925 with nothing more than announcer Mr. Hay and Uncle Jimmy Thompson on the fiddle; he was accompanied by his niece, Eva Thompson Jones on piano. Our update of this program takes the Opry from its beginnings to about the 1950's. The radio logs in the Nashville papers were used to show readers who was appearing each week, though those logs did not show the 'guests' during a segment. "[OPRY] Harry Gardiner — The early Opry did not always have 'musical' acts on the show. Sometimes it would include a known celebrity or someone on a tour that had a stop in Nashville. One such act was Harry Gardiner known as "The Human Fly." Think today's "Spiderman" crawling up buildings. In the early 1900's, there were many acts who performed as sort of acrobatic and would climb tall buildings - without any aid, without even any canvas below them to catch them if they fell. Probably the most well known was Harry Gardiner. Some videos of his work are found on youtube. He scaled a tall building in Nashville one day, then appeared on the Opry to tell the audience about it. We did our own research and were able to find his obituary - Wikipedia had originally thought he died mysteriously in Paris."
