""Though there was much criticism of our War Staff organisation before and during the war, it may be asked why were not the direct criticisms of Lord Jellicoe’s handling of the Grand Fleet at Jutland forthcoming at the time? The answer is that there is a real distinction between criticism of a system of administration, or even of the Board of Admiralty, and an Admiral or General in charge of fighting forces." >>More"
"Romanian and German Troops in Bessarabia, Ukraine and Crimea, 1941-42Romanian and German Troops in Bessarabia, Ukraine and Crimea, 1941-42"Cavalry General Vladimir Sukhomlinov (1848-1926) had a distinguished military career, marked by his exceptional abilities and notable service during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 under the command of Grand Duke Nicholai Nikolaevich the Elder. He was also closely associated with General Dragomirov, the highly respected Chief of the General Staff. Much of Sukhomlinov’s career was spent in the Kyiv Military District, where he served as Chief of Staff and later as Commander. In October 1905, following violent disturbances, he was appointed Governor-General of Kyiv, successfully quelling further pogroms and mutinies. His administrative skills were widely acknowledged, leading to his appointment as Minister of War in March 1909. However, in June 1915, Sukhomlinov was dismissed from his position as Minister of War, and in March 1916 he was relieved of his military duties. The press frequently likened him to a military version of the infamous Grigori Rasputin. In April 1916, Sukhomlinov was arrested on charges of state treason, dereliction of duty, and bribery. While most accusations lacked substantial evidence, he was found guilty of the Army's "unpreparedness for war" and sentenced to lifelong hard labor." >>More"
""General Ben Viljoen, while engaged on this work, requested me to write a short introduction to it. This request I gladly comply with. General Viljoen was a prisoner-of-war at Broadbottom Camp, St. Helena, where, after two years’ service in South Africa, I was stationed with my regiment. It was at the General’s further request that I conveyed this work to Europe for publication. The qualities which particularly endeared this brave and justly-famous Boer officer to us were his straightforwardness and unostentatious manner, his truthfulness, and the utter absence of affectation that distinguishes him. I am certain that he has written his simple narrative with candour and impartiality, and I feel equally certain, from what I know of him, that this most popular of our late opponents has reviewed the exciting episodes of the War with an honesty, an intelligence, and a humour which many previous publications on the War have lacked. "Before us lie strictly confidential telegrams exchanged between the German and Russian emperors from 1904 to 1907, both without the knowledge of their ministers. Much of this correspondence is highly intriguing from the perspective of the history of international politics; for the history of domestic Russian events occurring at this time, the correspondence offers very little. These telegrams were kept in the archives of the so-called His Majesty's Personal Field Chancellery >>More"
